Too often the needs of carers for people with a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome (AS) are all but ignored. The job of an AS carer is one of the most difficult possible.
Apart from the day-to-day business of caring, the AS carer has to deal with popular misconceptions about a condition that very often is all but invisible to everyone apart from the immediate close circle of the person with AS.
Worse still, there can be terrible feelings of despair and guilt which no one else understands and may be hard to share. Add in the strain all of this imposes on other relationships – with partners, children, siblings and colleagues – and sometimes it can all seem too much
The value of counselling for AS Carers
While there is a growing recognition of the value of counselling for people with a diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome, the needs of the people who care for them are seldom acknowledged.
As an accredited counsellor I have been working with AS carers (as well people with AS themselves) for the last four years. This experience has shown the huge benefits that can be gained through this type of counselling – not just in terms of supporting AS carers but also in helping families affected by AS to find new and more helpful ways of living with the condition.
